Reds
Ranging from fiery red to strawberry blonde to rustic copper, redheads are fun, wild, and radiant. Rich and vibrant reds can equally be complimented with warm or cool tones, and redheads are known for their freckles, sunburns, and the unwavering stereotype of being a wild child. Many cultures, even since the dawn of humanity, considered red hair to be taboo, adventurous, mischievous, or even unlucky. In olden England, troublesome pixies were always playing tricks on humans and where thought to have red hair. In ancient Germanic times, women with red hair were believed to be witches.
Only about 2% of the world has natural red hair. Redheads are most commonly found in northern European countries, hence the term 'Irish Red', even though Scotland currently has a higher percentage of redheads.
One can't help but stare when they see a vibrant red. It's distracting. Red colors trigger certain synapses in the brain. This is one reason that traffic lights and stop signs all over the world are red.
Keep your color true!
Red is the hardest color to get in and the hardest to get out. When trying to get rid of red, be prepared for a long processing time when trying to lift out the color. Use clarifying shampoos to help the fading process.
When doing highlights with red-lights, be careful when red-colored hair touches the bleached hair during the wash. Take those foils out and rinse quickly. The blonde hair might grab that red pigment if they touch for too long.
If you are coloring over red to make it a brown, avoid a warm base color. Go for a neutral base color, as red is the underlying color of brown, anyways. Be cautious when using blue/violent base colors to void out the strong reds; hair might come out a muddy brown with too many cool tones.
It's always best to leave it to a professional, because the hair color that only salons can buy is a lot stronger and more effective than the stuff you get in a public store, and they know how to use it.
When trying to get and keep red, use a good moisturizing conditioner to keep the hair nourished and 'fill in the holes'. The size of a molecule in red color is different than that of blondes and brunettes and can 'fallout' more easily. Wella color systems devised a different molecular formula for reds and I've used it with noticeably positive results.
Avoid clarifying shampoos/conditioners as they are deep cleansers and can cause the color to fade quickly.
Avoid UV rays. You don't have to become a vampire to keep your red true. Just be cautious of overexposure. Products like Redken's Color Extend Sun Spray can assist with this with it's SPF protection and filters.
Avoid over washing.
Do a clear color application. Sometimes used as a conditioning treatment, because of it's ability to fill in the holes of the hair shaft, a clear color application is also used like a clear top-coat of nail polish.
Don't be discouraged with your first application. The first red coloring might fade quickly, but the more you do it, the more you are solidifying the color into your hair.

Myth:
Redheads have a different sensitivity to pain.
They've done tests, and they've done studies, and apparently redheads aren't just big babies.Redheads are most susceptive to temperature induced pain while, at the same time, are determined to be more tolerant of electrical pains. Don't go testing this by putting a penny in the light socket.
The same mutant gene that causes too much pheomelanin, which causes the red hair, also effects pain receptors in the brain.
It is believed that there are even differences in tolerance to medications and painkillers between red haired women and red haired men.

Educate Me:
Red hair is the rarest natural hair color in humans and is considered a genetic mutation. Red hair is a recessive trait that is carried along with DNA, even if it is not prominent. This recessive gene can sometimes show in mens' beards, even if not on their heads.Red haired people have the smallest density of hair on their heads and in turn have the smallest ponytails.
The color red is formed by an greater amount of pheomelanin, one of the two kinds of melanin proteins. Pheomelanin causes fairer skin, which is vulnerable to large amounts of tiny sunspots. We call them freckles.
Redheads are more vulnerable to sun related diseases like Melanoma, because of the lesser abilities to filter UV rays.
